How we approach problems
Problems rarely come with one right way in. What matters is working out what kind of problem it actually is before deciding what to do about it
What we draw on
Different problems need different ways of thinking. Depending on the situation, we may draw on:
Psychology & behavioural science
How people perceive, decide, react and behave
Research & investigation
Finding the information, people and examples that could change the answer
Systems thinking
Understanding how different parts of a problem affect each other
First-principles reasoning
Breaking a problem down instead of automatically accepting the usual assumptions around it
Economics & incentives
Understanding what people, organisations and systems are actually encouraged to do
Analogous problems
Looking at how similar problems have been solved in other industries, countries or situations
Specialist knowledge
Finding the right expertise when a problem requires knowledge we should not pretend to have
Data & evidence
Testing explanations against what actually happened rather than what merely sounds convincing
Observation
Seeing what happens in practice, especially when the situation is best understood in person
AI & computational tools
Helping us search, compare, analyse and explore possibilities faster
Why distance can help
The closer you are to a problem, the harder it can be to see clearly
You care how it ends, so it can be harder to stay neutral. Old assumptions can quietly start to feel like facts, and people rarely have unlimited time to step away and examine the situation properly
Across three studies with 693 people, participants reasoned more wisely about another person’s problem than their own Grossmann and Kross, 2014
Problems, in practice
The situations below are hypothetical. They are simply a way to show what we might question, investigate and test
Personal problem
“Something about this property purchase doesn’t feel right”
The purchase is close to going ahead. Nothing has clearly killed it. But something feels off.
How we’d approach it
We would turn that feeling into things that can actually be checked. What triggered the doubt? What has been verified and what is assumed?
We would rather find a clear reason to pause than watch someone proceed with a quiet worry they never acted on.

“I want to make a major change in my life without creating chaos for everyone around me”
The decision is made. The person wants to make a major change without unnecessarily damaging everything around them.
How we’d approach it
We would map who actually depends on the current arrangement, which consequences can be prevented and which simply need to be accepted.
Then we would build a practical route: what to arrange first, who needs to know and in what order.

“Sales are down. We’ve changed the marketing twice and nothing’s really changed”
It looks like a marketing problem. It might be. But falling sales only tell us where the problem is showing up.
How we’d approach it
Before changing the marketing again, we’d find out where the decline actually begins. Are fewer people arriving? Are they arriving but not buying? Are customers dropping out later? Did something else change first?
We’d rather find the right problem before getting very good at solving the wrong one.

“The airport wants to spend £80 million to make passport control faster”
A major airport wants to spend £80 million to make passport control faster. Passengers currently wait around 40 minutes.
How we’d approach it
We would ask whether the real problem is the time or what the time feels like. Sometimes a much cheaper change to the waiting experience outperforms a very expensive capacity upgrade.
The useful question is not always how to spend more. It is how to understand what people are actually complaining about.

“I want to give away a large amount of money, but I want to know it will actually do something useful”
Someone wants to give away a large amount of money and know it will actually do something useful.
How we’d approach it
We would start with the change they want to create, then work out where the money has the strongest chance of creating it.
Finding organisations willing to accept the money is easy. Knowing which ones will turn it into real change is the harder part.

We do not publish client problems, names, circumstances or outcomes. We do not turn engagements into case studies, testimonials or marketing material without explicit permission
Guided by principles, not just opportunity
We are deliberately selective. Not for the sake of exclusivity, but because we take on a small number of problems at a time, so each one gets real attention

Questions
What kinds of problems do you accept?
Business, personal and non-profit problems that matter and have stopped moving. The problem should be clear enough for us to look at properly
What happens after I submit?
We read it within 24 hours. You either get an acceptance with next steps, or a decline and your deposit back in full
When does the investigation begin?
As soon as we accept and have what we need. Most problems get a way forward in 48 to 72 hours
Is a solution guaranteed?
No. We investigate, form a view, and give you a recommended direction. If a problem has no clean answer, we say so
Why is there a deposit?
It is 10% of the price. It holds review time, counts towards the total if we accept, and is refunded if we decline
Can I speak with someone first?
Submit the problem first. If we accept, the private call is part of the work, and you get a direct line for questions
